Thatch was found one day by Master Carpenter Harkins as he stepped out the guild house’s front door to pick up that morning’s milk delivery. It is not unusual for guilds to take in orphaned children, though this was the first one left to the Roofer’s, so the new baby was taken in by the extremely worried and inexperienced staff. He was cared for and looked after, and grew up strong and with a lack of fear of heights. Eventually his surrogate father, the lucky Harkins, decided that the boy needed a name. (Until this point, he had been known as The Basket Case.) Being of the unimaginative type, Harkins decided on ‘Shingles’. After consulting the boy himself, it was changed to Thatch.
A few years later, Thatch decided he was tired of his roofer’s life, and that he would seek his fortune elsewhere. He packed his things and gathered his courage and set off into the world with the promise of never having to see another ladder again. He left the city of his possible birth and headed toward the coast. On his travels he met a young man who said he was on his way to Aratari to join the city watch. (He also said something about being a dwarf and a vegetable, but Thatch wasn’t listening.) Thatch was interested in the idea of Aratari, so he changed his course and soon found himself in his nation’s capitol, or at least the area around it. He rented an apartment and got himself a job working at a vegetable shop. Unfortunately, he had only been living there about a week before both his residence and place of work were burnt down by a dragon. (The beast was later identified as a member of a terrorist group and was captured by the Department of Homeland Security for questioning. Water-boarding so far has been unsuccessful.)
This incident more than anything opened Thatch’s eyes to the dangers of the world, and that to be adequately prepared to deal with them, he must take action. So, without delay, he joined the City Watch. Now he is trying to take action against the dangers in this world, and any worlds that happen to get pulled into this one whenever a psychopathic wizard starts messing with causality.
