Aethelfled, daughter of Alfred the Great, hated life in the castle. She was a quiet, bookish person who dreamed about adventures she would never had, and the thick stone walls stiffled her. Whenever possible, she would sneak out to the woods to read, ignoring her caretakers’ worries about bandits and other unsavory characters.
One day, two scoundrels by the name of Dredge and Ljuda found her wandering in the forest and promptly spirited her away as a “voluntary recruit” to the Guard. When after a few days it became clear that they had no intention of harming her, Aethel decided to enjoy the adventure she had been given and soon discovered that she enjoyed the work.
Unfortunately, after a week or so she accidentally let slip her father’s name. Nervous that her famously short-tempered father would believe they had deliberately kidnapped her, the captain ordered her home. To the horror of her female relatives, Aethel has spent the majority of her time since her return attempting to get back to the Guard, or, failing that, to gather a fighting force of her own. Thus far she has been unsuccessful, but she has established a network of messengers through which she keeps in contact with the Guard.
